Pregnancy pains: What to do about back pain

Posted on: 29 February 2016

When you are pregnant, you will have a variety of different pains and discomforts. From migraine headaches to back pain, there are many things you will deal with as you carry your child. Back pain is one of the more common complaints, but luckily, there are options for relieving the discomfort. Here are some different options for reducing your pregnancy-related back pain.

Get Regular Exercise

Pregnancy-related back pain is often from bad posture or from improper strength in the back muscles. A good way to fix this problem is by increasing your level of exercise. You don't want to overdo it while pregnant, especially considering that other parts of your body might be uncomfortable. However, try to introduce gentle exercise, such as walking every day, taking a pregnancy swimming class, or even doing pregnancy yoga. These exercises improve your strength and flexibility and make a big difference in your back pain.

See a Chiropractor

Chiropractic care might seem too harsh for a pregnant body, but many chiropractors specialise in pregnancy treatments. Make sure you let them know you are pregnant so they can adjust their treatments accordingly. They will use different methods, such as massage, spinal alignment to improve your posture, and hot and cold treatments. In fact, hot and cold treatments are often recommended by doctors for back pain, so getting it done by a professional is a great option for relieving the pain.

See a Physical Therapist

In some cases, the back pain is more serious than just strain and aches from carrying a baby. You might have a more serious condition that is causing the pain, which requires learning certain stretches and exercises. This is when you should consider seeing a physical therapist. If you were in an accident before getting pregnant, you might never have learned the right exercises needing to improve your strength and flexibility. A physical therapist will work with you to relieve your pain and teach you movements to help you through the rest of your pregnancy.

Consider Acupuncture

Since pain relievers aren't usually safe during pregnancy, you should consider natural ways to relieve the pain. One thing to consider is acupuncture. This involves placing thin needles in certain parts of your body that help to relieve the pain and begin to heal the cause of the pain. As long as the acupuncturist knows you are pregnant, this can be completely safe for you and the baby. The needles are extremely thin, so you won't even feel them.

Living life with a crook back

I was always really healthy and physically active until I got back ended leaving the gym one day. Not only was the back of my car trashed, but also my back and neck have never been the same again. I really miss being able to live my life with full movement and no pain. I hope I can get back to my pre injury state one day. This blog tracks my progress and my treatments with the chiropractors and other medical specialists and is a way for me to see how far I've come. It can be really useful to see how much progress I have made.
